Not long back, we were over at Legends doing the recording for Siidshow3. I was talking to some random people here and there cause the Myndflip name has started to get out there, which makes me happy. It’s the normal BS conversation about the radio station, the bands, shit like that. In between sets, I had one guy ask me a question which somewhat caught me off guard, and I really couldn’t give a good answer to at the time….
Why do you do it?
I had never been asked that. Since we started Myndflip, then started the radio project, I’ve gotten use to the praise and thanks for bands and fans alike. No one had actually questioned the purpose of why I do this.
The only answer I’ve been able to give, and the only thing on my mind when we started this whole thing, was to help out the bands out here. Any other possible options really haven’t seemed as fulfilling.
The Hours:
It’s definitely not a love for that. We all have regular jobs, and regular lives. We have to spend time at work, then come home to kids, wives, girlfriends, etc. It’s hard enough on that type of daily routine to handle that, plus work in some type of personal alone time to just relax. Now you add in hours spent during the week at shows recording, promoting, etc. More hours spent at home at the computer working on the site, more promotion, updates, and the like. Don’t forget to mix in time spent trying to work on other projects along with the radio station, as it’s not the only thing we do.
Financial Gain:
What financial gain? We’re still new and getting the footprint out there, so don’t count on advertising dollars yet. We don’t charge the bands for this, as it would be a pretty shitty thing to do considering they’re blowing their money on travel, equipment, and other expenses. We do all this shit out of pocket, so yeah that one is definitely out. I don’t want to think about how much we’ve spent on software, equipment, and drinking.
Fame:
Say what? We’re not the band, so yeah I don’t see any groupies grabbing at my jock, or asking for autographs. We do get plenty of respect and thanks from the bands involved, which works fine for me.
Seeing Exotic Places:
Please refer back to the section regarding the hours. We don’t get shit for free time to travel. Would be nice, but not happening. We might get lucky one day and get an all expense paid trip to Disneyland someday, but I won’t cross my fingers.
Ok, so obviously the perks can be a bit limited at times, to say the least. Fact is though, I still fucking love doing this. I know these guys. They’re personal friends of mine, I grew up with some of them, went to school with them, and sit on the couch drinking beer with them. Any amount of work that I do to help them out, they’re putting in just as much to get themselves out there and listened to. I sit here typing on a keyboard, and they’re sweating their asses off practicing in garages and dealing with shitty ass club owners trying to make enough cash to cover gas back home even though they packed the fucking bar.
And for those guys to take a momenty to say thanks to me for what I do, when they have more than enough fans to thanks for showing support, yeah that works. I’ll take that any fucking day.
Rock on bitches!
